Pupil who became a chemist gets a great reaction
A chemist at King’s Lynn Power Station was in his element when he returned to his old school in the Philippines and picked up a science prize.
Reynaldo Lachica, environmental and process chemist, was given the 2010 Outstanding Alumnus Award for Science by the Manuel A Roxas High School in Manila. It recognised his 18-year career in chemistry both in the Philippines and the UK. Reynaldo, who was presented with the award by the City Mayor of Manila the Honourable Alfredo S Lim, said:“It was really exciting for me to go back to my former secondary school and receive this recognition for my achievements in chemistry and my work overseas.”
Since working at King’s Lynn, Reynaldo has helped to install a new meter that measures the level of impurities in the steam used to drive the turbine.
He is also looking at ways to manage corrosion in the station’s air cooled condenser. Steve Adams, operations manager said: “The work Rey has done will stand us in good stead to reduce the station’s start-up times and improve its reliability. “The award is an excellent recognition of the learning and experience he’s had in the industry.”
Reynaldo moved to the UK in 2002 with his wife to find a better quality of life and gain more experience in chemistry. He said: “It’s really a dream of everyone in the Philippines to move to a more industrial country like the UK, and working for Centrica Energy has given me a great opportunity to practice my profession.” Reynaldo gained British citizenship in July last year and said he plans to keep developing his career at the company.
