“Segunda Mana” at Caritas Manila started as a fundraising project in 2007, and it was also a major part of Caritas’ 55th year Anniversary in 2008 fundraising drive to collect 55 Million for charity and social services.

Segunda Mana has now become a charity store for the poor and is now gaining solid support from various entities around Metro Manila. To date, Segunda Mana counts on 200 corporations and 1,000 families and individuals as regular donors

So how does Segunda Mana work?

Caritas Manila accepts old clothes, toys, shoes, and furniture and sell them for a very cheap price (as low as P5 for a used shirt/cloth).

Inquirer reports that Caritas also welcomes brand new donations. In fact, the charity store is divided into two sections: the brand-new section and the used section. Both sections hold various stuff that range from clothing to reading materials.

Program head Gilda Cortez said the items carry 20 to 50 percent off price tags. “If the item is slightly damaged but can still be used, it’s much cheaper,” she said, adding that furniture and office equipment are repaired before they are put on sale.

Fr. Anton Pascual, Caritas Manila’s executive director, envisions to install charity stores across the country to generate more proceeds that will help alleviate poverty.

“Segunda Mana also provides additional funds for our disaster and crisis management program that helps victims of fires, typhoons, flash floods and other calamities,” he added. “Likewise, it provides paralegal assistance, values formation and skills training to prison inmates as part of our restorative justice ministry.”
