I grew up in Pandacan and left when I was 22 year old. I have been living in the US for over thirty years now and has been to a lot of places in the world. I was stationed in different parts of the world with the US Army. It was such an exciting time for me. Although I have been so far away, there is still that fire inside of me that burns and tells me I am a “Batang Pandacan”. I remember going to school at the old Tioque branch at Labores, where there used to be an old theater called “Diana”. Such memorable times when me and my friends would caltch an afternoon movie for 25 centavos and see a double feature of Efren Reyes battling te evil Johnny Monteiro in a duel. Then we would buy some “manggang hilaw” after the show, or rent a bicycle at that place across the “cinehan” and rie around Balagtas and Beata for an hour. I remember that everytime it rains , it would flood all over(still does) My barkada would all go out and make lusong and make a good time out of a bad situation. There was so much to do in Pandacan. I think that Christmas was the best time I can remember. THe “simbang gabi” was so beautiful and the weather was not as warm(medyo malamig pa ang panahon noon – about 1959 to 1963) wala pa noong EL NINO. We make a stop at the puto bumbong store along Labores and then go to Zamora Elementary and hang out until the sun comes up. OOH!! What good times we had when we were young . I may have been gonew for so long a time now, but deep within my heart I am still a Pandacan boy. My hear belongs here and I can not wait to come hometo my friends and loved ones.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to post this.

Anyway, nasa Pandacan ako up to 1972 when i left for US. Anyway nice reading these posts, it brings back fond memories.

I used to spend summertime in Pandacan when i still a kid until i reached college, We still have a house in teodora were my grandmother lives. I have a lot of friends living in the four main streets(teodora, labores, industria & narciso)of “bayan” side. though most have already transferred residences or have left for abroad, they still go back during fiesta just to enjoy pandacan. I also go home to pandacan whenever i am in manila. hope to be back in pandacan soon!

Brothers! Neighbors and Kabayan! Mabuhay ang Pandaqueños! It was so nice and clean in Pandacan. But I was thinking to compare the place before when I was a small boy. Brods, what do you think? watch the glimpse shot of labores facing south where the caption says “the tall building on the left were house one of our members”. But, facing north where it wasn’t captured by our good friends camera, you will find an eyes sore. Theres a lot of Delivery trucks parked along the street side by side waiting for the bottle drinks merchandize to be loaded where before was none. I use to walk on that clean street before, going to school and it was a nice place, when it was cleared with those trucks. In fact, the file of trucks reached the stretch of J. Zamora Elem. School I’m not in contrary to those businessman who owned that warehouse, but there should be a way to clear that area. I may suggest that the owner should designate some distant forwarding place where they will wait for their turn to be called. Di ba mas ayos yun? Lets help by calling the attention of our Honorable Barangay Chairman concerned to formulate the solution.

I was born in 1955 and lived in Pandacan for up to about 1968. My family own’s Diana Theatre in Labores Street. The family’s that I can still recall are the Magsanoc from Kahilom, Street(?) and the Pharmacy owned by the Mercado’s in front of the theatre. Labores Elementary School used the theatre for graduation and programs. The theatre burned. I appreciate if anyone can share a photo of the Diana Theatre or old pictures of Labores. I haven’t been in Pandancan since 1970. What I can recall is Diana therate is the terrotorial boundary between oxo and sputnik.

kudos to the creator of this site! this is such a blessing that I uncovered your site when I was looking for the beata elementary school. Nakatira ako sa Pandacan mula 1956 and moved dito the CA early 1980s. Our first house I remember was right in front of the eating place corner of sto. nino and beata. iyong mayri ay dalawang chinese, si mang tony and I ching (they are both chinese) both are so generous kapag pasko, may paabot sila sa mga bumibili ng either piece of kesong de bola o tasy (tinapay). ito din kanto na ito, may nagtitinda ng balot, chicharon o diario. malapit sa kanto na ito e may pharmacy (botica boie(sp?), itong pharmacy na ito has been there forever, i am not sure if its still there.
now at this same street (sto. nino) if you go in, may tindahan may ari e si aling tayang. anyway, this is the same street where I guess the de guias live and the alano’s at that time.
so anyway, we moved from beata, then sa tomas claudio, malapit sa riles at estacion ng pandacan and then the sta. maria.
ang tatay kong jeepney driver sa pandacan for so many decades, not sure how long, his co-drivers calls him domeng kambing. he competed in jeepney king contest (placed 2nd one time).
i know where the lanuza’s place, at that time not that far to place where you can take a bangka papunta sa kalahi.
this is so neat to connect to my co-pandacanes! again, my hats off to you wonderful folks who keep this site going! cheers!

I just came across this site while doing a research on the elderly of district 6 in manila. nabasa ko yung mga kwentuhan, nakakatuwa. although I didn’t grow up in pandacan, we visit the place once in a while. Si papa kase was born and raised there, well, most of the people who share the same surname i know, did. hence, the laura, labores, zamora, kahilum landmarks were familiar. the thread made me miss my dad. kung nabasa nya to, malamang andaming kwento nun.
salamat!

nais ninyon i-follow up ang projects nila.
developers to acquire the oil depo property. Sumainyo ang
magandang umaga. Born and raised ako sa Pandacan with few gray hairs na. Brother ko si Jess (Boy) Cristobal now based in Bay Area in California.

Hi to all Pandaquenos. I was born and bred in Pandacan and our ancestral home is still there where my two nephews lived. Our place is in Balagtas subd. in kalye Febo, but we used to live in beata in front of the Mauricio’s residence. We and the Capistranos are the first ones who own the buses in pandacan. I now live here in London but I go home every year and I still hang out in balagtas coz most of my mates are still there. Once a pandaqueno always a pandaqueno. Regards to every pandaquenos in the world. Mabuhay tayong lahat

If your Dad’s name is Onnie for Honorio and your Mom is Nida? or Nayda? U use to live near the Mendoza’s in Balagtas.. if so then I think my Dad use to play mahjong with them. I also remember Lila Capistrano who went to J.Zamora Elem Sch. I migrated to the US and now Japan based. Nice to
hear from a Pandaqueno.

Hello sa mga taga-Pandacan! Hindi ako taga Pandacan pero noong nasa P.I. pa kami, the family used to go to Beata dahil sa Fiesta. Do you still remember me Roland? Kami yung may tailoring shop sa Quiapo where your Dad used to have his trousers done, katabi ng Malabon Restaurant. I wish Roland mabasa mo ito, kasi the group now are preparing for the Grand Reunion sa P.I. this coming Feb. 2012. Please get in touch when you’re free, the whole family now is residing in Ca, US. Or, you may get in touch with Nonoy & Zen Vida whose from Pandacan also.

Hi to all Pandacaquenos,
It is a bliss to have found this site, by chance while googling.
I was born and raised in Tomas Claudio Street, Beata.
Malou mentioned people and places that I am familiar with: Mang Toni’s restaurant, where I used to eat saging na may yelo at gatas, tinapay na may palamang corned beef, kanin at ulam, at pansit. Masarap ang mga pagkain nila dun. It was such a treat for me when I ate there. Most of the customers there were jeepney drivers.
Across the street going to Lorenzo de la Paz, was a small store/carinderia na masarap magluto ng menudo at mechado. The owners were an old couple, the woman was a teacher, I 4got her name. Beside that store was a small shack – like a waiting shed – na may nagtitinda ng biko, palitaw at kalamay, masarap din hahaha.
Aling Teyang’s store was my Mom’s fave, “Kapag wla kina aling Teyang saka ka lng bumili sa iba ha!” That what she always instructed me. Sch., Domingo ang last name nila.
Let’s go out of Sto. Nino and back to Beata street. – meron sila jan tindang meryenda like pansit, ginatan, tsamporado almost everyday, but during Christmas time, simbang gabi onwards, sikat na sikat sila at palagi pila ang bumibili sa kanila dahil masarap sila gumawa ng bibingka at puto bungbong!
In front of our house, across the street was the Mobile Terminal Oil building with Security Bank office inside. It had a wide, long, concrete cement parking lot outside the building, beside the street, used to park their gasoline trucks – and our playground too. Way down yonder was the Pandacan Train Station, which is still there up to now. I didn’t venture much further down to Kahilom street, which was the end of Tomas Claudio street. People were so bad that when they sensed you are not resident there or “dayo” in slang, they will extort money from you, and do you harm if you can’t give them the money or try to fight back.
Going out of Tomas Claudio Street to the left was the railway crossing with two kawayan poles, painted striped black and white, that went down when train was about to pass by. Turning right and go straight, following the railway track will lead you to the steel bridge, over the Pasig river, going to Sta Mesa.
A little bit down on the left side, is going to Peter Paul Candy Factory, at the bank of the river. Before you reached the factory, you will see a vast stretch of grassy land where there was scarcely any house, but many carabaos…yes! carabaos! This was in the early 60s, I was about 10 years old. Would you believe that! There was once some carabaos in Pandacan! hahaha. The fun part was that there was a somewhat rounded shallow lagoon that the carabaos used to hang out. During and after the rain, that lagoon will have a clean water and we would go there to swim, dive…swim, dive..swim, till all our skins had wrinkled up!
Part 2 will be some tragic moments and horrifying accidents I’ve witnessed myself in Pandacan. Till then,..cheers.
